Italian Neighborhood Community History Project
SHARE YOUR STORY
We’re seeking information from residents to determine the boundaries of the historic Italian neighborhood of Keene, New Hampshire, and document its culture and development over time.

Keene residents with connections to the Italian neighborhood are encouraged to submit to the project. The Commission is seeking the following, particularly as relates to specific locations in the neighborhood:
-
PERSONAL ANECDOTES and MEMORIES
Upload written testimonies that detail the community and the experience of living or spending time there.
-
PHOTOGRAPHS, DOCUMENTS and OTHER ARTIFACTS
Share photographs of the people and places that made the neighborhood what it was, as well as other novel items - an ad for a neighborhood business, a personal letter, or memorabilia from a local event.
-
ORAL HISTORIES
Record yourself, a friend, or a loved one recounting stories of life in the Italian neighborhood. See our guide for suggested subjects and recording tips.
-
NEIGHBORHOOD BOUNDARIES
Submit a data point with your opinion of where the neighborhood begins and ends.
About the Italian Neighborhood Community History Project
With support from the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources and the Certified Local Government Grant Program, the Keene Heritage Commision has developed a web-based tool that facilitates the crowdsourcing of community history. The project is kicking off with an exclusive focus on Keene’s “Italian Neighborhood,” an area roughly bounded by Island Street, Pearl Street, and West Street, as well as the annexed Butler Court.
The project translates crowdsourced information into a place-based story map that links images and stories to specific locations. The Commission hopes that this crowdsourcing effort will uncover photos, anecdotes, and personal narratives that contribute to a richer understanding of the area's heritage and evolution, as well as the identification of the boundaries of the neighborhood from a historical perspective.
